January 2009 Holiday Events Explained:
New Year's Day is the first day of the new calendar year; always falling exactly seven days after Christmas Day. In Canada like in most countries New Year's Day is a holiday. As of late the celebration has been more about New Year's Eve than New Year's Day. Though in many places in Canada special events such as Vancouver's polar bear swim are held each New Year's Day.
Eastern Orthodox Christmas is usually celebrated with observers serving Christmas cakes and singing songs. The difference in days from December 25 is explained by the Eastern Orthodox use of the Julian calendar in place of the Gregorian calendar or New Calendar.
Al Hijra or the Muslim New Year, is a cultural event which only some Muslims partake on the first day of Muharram. Muharram according to the Islamic Calendar is the first month of each year. There is no religious significance attached to this day. Instead some Muslims use the day to remember the life of the Prophet Muhammad and the Hijra(or emigration), he made to the city now known as Medina in Saudi Arabia.
